How to start homeschooling in Arizona

The legal steps, in order, checked against Arizona law.

Short answer: To homeschool in Arizona, a parent files an affidavit of intent with the county school superintendent within 30 days of starting. The child must be taught reading, grammar, mathematics, social studies, and science. State law does not require testing of homeschooled children.

Checked against Ariz. Rev. Stat. 15-802 on Nov 8, 2026. Compulsory school ages: 6 to 16. This is what the law says, not legal advice.

Homeschool

Parents, guardians, or custodians who teach their child at home or run a nonpublic school conducted primarily by the parent.

Steps

  1. Within 30 days of starting homeschool, file an affidavit of intent with your county school superintendent. It lists the child's name and date of birth, the current address of the school the child is attending, and the names, phone numbers, and addresses of the people who have custody.
  2. Provide instruction in at least reading, grammar, mathematics, social studies, and science.
  3. If you stop homeschooling, notify the county school superintendent within 30 days. If you resume, file a new affidavit within 30 days.
  4. If your child is under eight on September 1 and you do not want to start home instruction until age eight, you may file an affidavit stating that instead.

Public school sports and activities

A homeschooled child who lives in a public school's attendance area may try out for that school's interscholastic activities on the same terms as enrolled students. The person providing primary instruction submits written verification of whether the student is passing each subject and making satisfactory progress. A child who was enrolled in a public, private, or charter school earlier in the same school year is not eligible for the rest of that year.

After the paperwork

  1. Find your child's level: placement tests for each curriculum, so you buy the right level
  2. Pick a curriculum: match programs to your child, your style and your budget
  3. Buy it on sale: when each curriculum goes on sale, so you don't pay full price
  4. Start free: free curriculum and tools while you decide
