How to start homeschooling in Oklahoma

The legal steps, in order, checked against Oklahoma law.

Short answer: Oklahoma's compulsory attendance law allows a child to be educated by other means instead of attending school, as long as that education is provided for the full term the local schools are in session. The State Department of Education says home schools are not regulated and that state law does not require parents to register with or seek approval from the state. The department lists recommended practices, such as notifying the local school, that it says are not required by law.

Checked against 70 Okla. Stat. 10-105(A) on Nov 8, 2026. Compulsory school ages: 5 to 18. This is what the law says, not legal advice.

Education by other means (home instruction)

Parents or guardians who will educate their child at home instead of enrolling the child in a public or private school.

Steps

  1. Provide your child's education at home for the full term the schools of your district are in session.
  2. Consider the department's recommendations, which it says are not required by law: tell the principal of your local school that you plan to home school, follow a defined curriculum, and plan for the equivalent of 180 days a year.
  3. Keep records of your child's instruction and progress. The department says a parent must show documentation of the home instruction if the child later re-enters public school.
