How to start homeschooling in Wyoming

The legal steps, in order, checked against Wyoming law.

Short answer: Wyoming treats a home-based educational program as a private school for compulsory attendance. Since July 1, 2025, parents no longer submit a curriculum to the school board each year. The program must provide a basic academic educational program in seven subjects.

Checked against Wyo. Stat. 21-4-101(a)(iii), (v), (vi) on Nov 8, 2026. Compulsory school ages: 7 to 16. This is what the law says, not legal advice.

Parents or guardians teaching their own children, or having a person they designate teach them.

Steps

  1. Provide a sequentially progressive curriculum in reading, writing, mathematics, civics, history, literature, and science.
  2. If your child is enrolled in a public school, tell the district you are enrolling the child in a home-based program. Without that notice, the law requires an in-person meeting and written consent to withdraw a child under 18.

Leaving public school mid-year

A parent of a child under 18 who has not notified the district of enrolling the child in another district, a private school, or a home-based program must meet in person with a district counselor or administrator and give written consent to the withdrawal. That consent must include a separate release of the student's name and address to the Wyoming National Guard Youth Challenge Program (Wyo. Stat. 21-4-102(c)).

After the paperwork

  1. Find your child's level: placement tests for each curriculum, so you buy the right level
  2. Pick a curriculum: match programs to your child, your style and your budget
  3. Buy it on sale: when each curriculum goes on sale, so you don't pay full price
  4. Start free: free curriculum and tools while you decide
